Learn!

CLCA’s 2024 Annual Convention offers two full days of high quality education — information you can immediately put to use to help your company grow.

On Wednesday, November 13, business guru and C-27 contractor Bill Schnetz will explore how you can boost profits by mastering chaos. Worried about crashing and burning? Facing an excess of high-maintenance clients with too few workers and too many headaches? In this workshop, you’ll master tactics that will keep you “in the game.” You’ll learn practical self-assessment, the importance of company culture, often overlooked business tools, and methods to foster accountability.

Next up are two new presentations: Catch the Water Management Profit Wave and The Benefits of CLCA Membership. Both present solutions to help grow your business.

On Thursday, we open with the popular Breakfast of Champions, roundtable discussions on pressing topics such as Mastering Social Media, Profiting from Water Management and Effectively Managing Clients. They’re short, concise and practical!

The education continues with:

  • You, Cal/OSHA and a Hefty Fine for Workplace Safety Violations: Now What?
  • Avoid Burn-Out: Bringing Wellness into the Workplace
  • New Plants from the Far Side of the World, and a Few Closer to Home
  • Guided tours of the Sherman Garden and Library and the Rogers Garden.

We’ll end the day with a new event, Food for Thought: Networking to Nourish your Business.

Your journey to growth and success is significantly easier if you do not travel alone, but with like-minded colleagues willing to offer support, guidance and encouragement.

For this exclusive event, you’ll be joined at dinner by three to five contractors from companies like yours. A table moderator will help participants explore the concerns they share and the common problems they confront and — more importantly — the solutions they have developed. We’ll exchange ideas, broaden connections and expand opportunities.

“I love the Breakfast of Champions. I learn so much!”

– Frank Niccoli, Past CLCA State President

Grow!

The Trophy Awards dinner and ceremony will amaze you with a display of excellence in California landscaping.

“The Trophy Awards is a celebration of the highest quality craftsmanship. All projects are built by contractors, and physically judged by industry professionals. There is no other program in our industry quite like it.”

– Alex Salazar, Groundcare Landscape Company

Golf!

And, of course, there will be golf.

““It’s nice to get to know clients and coworkers on a different level. Convention is a great place for casual, professional face-to-face interaction with industry colleagues.”

— Jeff Calhoun, FX Luminaire

Worried about crashing and burning? Facing an excess of high-maintenance clients with too few workers and too many headaches? In this all-day workshop presented by business coach extraordinaire Bill Schnetz, you’ll master powerful tactics that will help you master these challenges and keep you “in the game.”

The workshop focuses on the soft skills of business taught in a common-sense format from a contractor point of view. To develop a successful business, contractors need to free themselves from day-to-day tasks and learn the role of an entrepreneur. This workshop will show you how!

You’ll learn:

  • Practical self-assessment — a powerful tool for the self-employed.
  • That you are the message — fail or succeed by your message.
  • Overlooked business tools — the key to financial and team success.
  • Company culture — who needs it and how to get it.
  • Methods to foster accountability — because without accountability, nothing happens.
  • Business coaching — is it worth the money?

You, Cal/OSHA and a Hefty Fine for Workplace Safety Violations: Now What?

J.T. Parnell, Boretti Business Safety Solutions
9 – 10:30 a.m., Thursday, November 14

A Cal/OSHA safety inspector shows up, unannounced, at your jobsite. Or, the safety agency mails you a “we need to talk” investigation letter. Are you facing a hefty fine — or worse? What’s your next step? Regardless of the validity of the complaint that generated the investigation, you should be prepared.

In this “inside baseball” presentation, safety expert J.T. Parnell will walk you through key elements of a Cal/OSHA safety investigation, explaining both best practices to take and actions that you should absolutely avoid.

After outlining the Cal/OSHA investigatory process and the agency’s policies on violations, citations and penalties, our presenter will share:

  • Reasons why Cal/OSHA would arrive unannounced at your jobsite
  • Tactics you and your crew leaders can use when Cal/OSHA is present at your jobsite
  • What to expect after a jobsite inspection – Document Request, Intent to Cite, Citation Packet, Appeal

Avoid Burn-Out: Bringing Wellness into the Workplace

Maddie Hansen, MS, LMFT, Journeys Counseling
10:45 a.m. – noon, Thursday, November 14

Job burnout is a challenge for a significant number of green industry professionals, who face a daily challenge of trying to do too much with too little resources. The result is a sense of being worn out, both physically and emotionally, and the risk of feeling useless, powerless and empty.

In this workshops, therapist Maddie Hansen will share best practices to prevent burn out through stress management. To emphasize learning, this workshop presents information through both listening and practical interaction and application. Potential outcomes from this workshop include:

  • Increasing awareness of personal stress
  • Increasing ability to identify daily stressors
  • Building a personalized self-care/coping skills toolbox
  • Guided practice in evidence based self-regulation strategies and connection to ongoing resources for stress management

New Plants from the Far Side of the World, and a Few Closer to Home

Nicholas Staddon, Company Spokesperson and Plantsman, Everde Growers
1-2 p.m., Thursday, November 14

Join us on a journey of plant exploration in the United States and beyond. Our presenter has been involved with new plants for nearly 30 years and his passion of discovery is still flourishing. “Too often we do not fully appreciate all that goes into the discovery or creation of a new and unique plant. The time, effort and expense can be extraordinary, and in many cases a lifetime of work,” Nicholas says.

Attendees will be taken on a journey of discovery, meeting and going behind the scenes to see the work of breeders, hybridizers and Nicholas’s favorite group, plant explorers — men and women who travel to the most extreme parts of the world in search of new and notable plants. Nicholas will show us any number of terrific plants to perk your interest applicable for the State of California, being sure to broaden your knowledge of this Mediterranean climate we ply our profession in.

We’ll go behind the scenes to explore ecological horticulture, a method of designing, building, and maintaining gardens that considers the ecology of a site and creates gardens that enhance the surrounding environment. The objectives of ecological horticulture are to reduce water consumption, preserve water quality, prevent soil erosion, protect biodiversity, diminish the use of toxic pesticides, and minimize the use of non-renewable
