Welcome to the CLCA Water Certification Program

As part of the CLCA Water Management Certification program, you will use an online tool to track water use on a site.
This tool is located at water.clca.org.
Watch the how-to video or follow the steps below to create your account and document your water management skills.

1. Create Account on water.clca.org

  • An invitation to the site was sent to the email address you used to register for your certification classes.
  • The email was sent by [email protected]. The subject line is “Welcome: Your Name”
  • Click the link in the email to create a password for your new account.
  • The link in your email is personalized to you. For security purposes, it may be used once (and only once).
  • As part of the account creation process, you will be asked to create a new password.

2. Log In

  • Use your email address and the password you just created to log into water.clca.org.

3. Create a Site

  • A site may encompass an entire property or just part of it. For example, a backyard could be the site of a landscape project. Each site should have one water meter.
  • Click the Create Site button to get started.

4. Information Needed to Create a Site

  • Name of site. For example, Gibson residence backyard
  • City. Where is the site located? If the website does not display the city you enter, select a nearby city with a similar climate.
  • Evapotranspiration Adjustment Factor. This is automatically set to 0.80. You may not change this value.
  • Meter Name & Serial Number
  • Meter Units. HCF or Gallons.
  • Dedicated Line/ Commercial Meter. If you check this box, your site will not factor in residential water use (and you will not be able to enter information into the Current Number of Residents or Current Gallons Per Resident fields).
  • Current Number of Residents
  • Current Gallons Per Resident. Typical residential water use is 47 to 70 gallons per person per day. Please leave an explanatory note in the notes field if your residential water use number is outside that range.
  • Click the SAVE SITE button.

5. Add Hydrozones

  • A hydrozone is an area of a landscape where plants with similar water needs are grouped together and irrigated accordingly.
  • For example, a lawn, a bed of drought-tolerant shrubs and a vegetable garden would typically be separate hydrozones because they require different amounts or frequencies of watering.
  • Each hydrozone is generally served by its own irrigation valve so watering can be adjusted to its needs.
  • Click the ADD NEW HYDROZONE button

6. Add Hydrozone Details

  • Name the hydrozone.
  • Plant Material Type. Select a plant material type, which sets the Plant Factor. Unsure about what plant material type to select? Talk to your nursery vendor or consult the University of California, Davis WUCOLS (Water Use Classification of Landscape Species) database.
  • Select an Irrigation Type
  • Enter Square Feet
  • Click Save Hydrozone
  • Repeat the process to enter additional hydrozones.
  • The site page will now describe how your budget was calculated.

7. Add a Meter Reading

  • On the site page, click the Add Meter Reading button.
  • The meter reading must be larger than the previous month’s reading. If the meter was reset or replaced, contact an administrator (use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page).
  • Meter readings must be made on a monthly basis and must be kept up to date as part of achieving certification and maintaining current certification.
  • Congratulations! You have taken the first steps towards becoming a Certified Water Manager.
